I might be a Wool (if you know you know), but I’m always happy to admit that I think Liverpool is one of the best cities in the UK. We do however all need a getaway now and then, which is why it’s so exciting that Jet2.com and Jet2Holidays have just opened their newest base at Liverpool John Lennon Airport! Liverpool is Jet2.com and Jet2holidays‘ 11th base in the UK and Jet2’s Liverpool routes will see them fly to 20 amazing destinations from March 2024 and 7 of these destinations – Bourgas (Bulgaria), Gran Canaria, Madeira, Paphos (Cyprus), Rhodes, and Zante – are exclusive to Jet2holidays from Liverpool! Gran Canaria is a place i visited on my first cruise but have never stayed in – I might just be swayed to go back with these cheap flights from Liverpool to Gran Canaria!
Why choose Gran Canaria?
Gran Canaria is one of Spain’s Canary Islands, located just off the coast northwestern Africa. Known for its black lava and white sand beaches, it’s the perfect holiday destination year round – the coldest month is typically January when it reaches an average of 18°C – so basically what it’s been for most of Augustt 2023 in St Helens! It’s capital city, Las Palmas, is a major stop for cruise ships and duty-free shopping – I actually visited Las Palmas on my first ever cruise on Island Escape. We managed to hit the city during a carnival!
Outside of the capital city though, you can find bustling resorts perfect for partying, or quieter areas where you can just enjoy the tranquility.

Where to stay in Gran Canaria
Whatever you’re looking for from your sunny holiday, you can find it on Gran Canaria. Here’s a rundown of just a few of the main resorts, all of which you can find on Jet2Holiday’s Gran Canaria listings.
Playa Del Ingles is the one you’ve probably heard of before – it’s one of Gran Canaria’s most famous resorts with a broad beach, trendy clubs and a amazing shopping scene. If you want entertainment as the sun goes down, with live music and cabaret to pair with cocktails, this is the one to choose.
Heading on holiday with the family? Head to Puerto Rico to please both the family and any party seekers among you. A hillside of stacked-up, whitewashed buildings adds character all around the sweeping shoreline, and there’s plenty to get stuck into among the waves, too.
Looking for a classy afair? Maspalomas is around 40 minutes from the capital of Las Palmas, and offers first-class restaurants and designer boutiques alongside soft, golden sanddunes.
Looking for something a little more rustic? The old fishing village of Puerto Mogan is a modern-day spectacle with a rustic resort feel – think gleaming white houses and touches of Venice. This resort offers historic quirks and plenty of evenings of traditional al fresco dining around the marina.
Finally if you’re trying to please the golfer in your family, El Salobre is the place to be – think acres of perfect, palm-lined greens surrounded by mountains on one side, and the Atlantic stretching to the horizon on the other. Views guaranteed from this luxury resort.
Eating gluten free in Gran Canaria

I adore Spanish food, and Gran Canaria is a great location to try out some iconic Spanish dishes, as well as a few of their own specials.
Papas arrugadas – ‘Arrugadas’ translates as ‘wrinkled’, and the traditional way to serve these potatoes is boiled in their skins, salted and dressed with a generous topping of mojo picón – a delicious spicy sauce made with garlic, olive oil, red or green pepper, cumin, salt and vinegar.
Pollo al salmorejo – Pollo al salmorejo is a delightful garlicky marinated chicken dish, cooked in white wine and seasoned with cumin, oregano, paprika and thyme. Conejo al al salmorejo follows the same recipe but with rabbit meat.
Adobo de cerdo – Adobo de cerdo is shoulder of pork in a rich, piquant sauce. The sauce or ‘adobo’ is a tasty marinade of paprika, oregano, garlic, salt and a generous slug of sherry vinegar
Sancocho – it consists of boiled salted fish (typically sea bass or a local variant of grouper fish) garnished with potatoes, sweet potatoes, gofio and red or green mojo sauce, all of it served in a clay casserole.
Jet2holdays.com makes in super easy to find self catering in Gran Canaria, though if you are booking accomodation yourself, be sure to check out cheap flights from Liverpool to Gran Canaria on jet2.com!
If you are self catering in Gran Canaria, you may be comforted by knowing that there are several Mercadona’s across the Island, one of my favourite supermarkets for gluten free self catering in Spain.
