Full disclosure: I was invited to try this gluten free afternoon tea for the purposes of this review. All opinions on how fit it is are my own (and Lizzie’s)
If there’s three things on a weekend that I love, it’s a day out in Liverpool, a cheeky gin & tonic and on an ideal day, cake.
So you can imagine my delight when I found out that Liverpool’s Titanic Hotel now offers a Gluten Free Afternoon Tea…with gin! Not only that, but they also offer a Vegan Gin Afternoon Tea as well!
In my friendship group, there’s myself and my friend Lizzie who are the designated special snowflakes, with Lizzie following a vegan diet. Finding somewhere we can both eat is often a faff to say the least. So finding somewhere that could cater for both of us for something that’s such a treat was an absolute joy!
The Titanic Hotel
Liverpool’s Titanic Hotel is a luxury venue that forms part of the redevelopment of the historic Stanley Dock complex. This area of warehouse forms one of the 6 sites in Liverpool making up its UNESCO World Heritage Maritime Mercantile City listing , and is being transformed into a series of apartments, bars and shops planned.
As well as being a beautiful place to stay, with 153 luxurious rooms to stay in, the Titanic Hotel is the perfect venue for meetings, weddings, spa days or food and drink.
One tip I would give – don’t walk! We did and it’s just a bit too far to be a nice stroll!
As I mentioned, finding somewhere that both myself and Lizzie can eat on a girls day out can be a bit of a faff, so I was amazed to learn that alongside their Traditional Afternoon Tea, the Titanic Hotel also offer Vegetarian Afternoon Tea, Vegan Afternoon Tea and Gluten Free Afternoon Tea!
What’s more, you can transform your experience into a Gin Afternoon Tea, with your treats accompanied by a Bombay Sapphire Gin Cocktail.
Just the tonic!
Once we were seated, our lovely waiter David brought over a selection of Quinteassential teas to choose from – the posh loose leaf kind! There were flavours including Imperial Earl Grey, Tales of the Orient, British Mint and Caramel, but I just went for the Signature Breakfast tea (I was assured there were normal teabags for if you don’t like the loose leaf teas!)
We also presented with the menu to choose our gin cocktails – I chose the Rosemary & Olive Gin Cocktails, made with Bombay Sapphire English Estate Gin, rosemary and black olive tonic, garnished with rosemary, hazelnut and mint.
You can also choose from Rhubarb & Hibiscus Gin Cocktail, Bombay Sapphire English Estate Gin, rhubarb and hibiscus tonic and garnished with rose petals and orange wedge. or Peppermint Mojito, made from
Bombay Sapphire English Estate Gin, peppermint tea, lime juice and gomme.
If gin isn’t your thing, you can also enjoy your Titanic Hotel Afternoon Tea with a glass of Prosecco or Lauren Perrier Champagne – perfect if you’re there for a special occasion!
It wasn’t long before our afternoon tea arrived, and what a spread it was! You often miss out when opting for gluten free or vegan options but there was a bit of everything!
My side of the rack included a selection of finger sandwiches on gluten free bread – I enjoyed coronation chicken, Roast beef, salmon with crème fraîche and cucumber and cream cheese.
The vegan afternoon tea sandwiches included of avocado and sun blushed tomato, Hummus and vegetable provencal, Vegan cheese and red onion, traditional cucumber sanwiches and roasted red pepper and pesto sandwiches.
On to the sweet stuff!
As I said, you often miss out on a course with dietary requirements – not here! Both Lizzie and I had vegan and gluten free scones to look forward to, along with jam and clotted cream for me.
Which goes first for you, the jam or the cream?
The only criticism I’d give here is that we were given one bowl of jam and one bowl of cream with no spoons – we used teaspoons to serve ourselves the jam but there could have been the potential for a cross contamination risk here.
Next up were a selection of mini desserts – and not a gluten free chocolate brownie in sight!
Full disclosure, I couldn’t finish my afternoon tea – it’s surprising how full you can feel from small bites!
If you’re looking for a gluten free afternoon tea in Liverpool, I’d definitely recommend checking out the Titanic Hotel!
How to book
Afternoon Tea bookings are essential and need to be made at least 24 hours in advance. When making the booking its essential to let the hotel know if you have any dietary requirements.
